Letters to Laura: Civil War Correspondence to Laura Stuart of
Wytheville, Virginia, 1863-1865

Featuring forty-one letters to Laura Stuart of Wytheville, Virginia, during the Civil War years, this book portrays both civilian and Confederate soldier life in southwest Virginia and military campaigns in East Tennessee, Cedar Creek, Fishers Hill, and Petersburg.  Laura Stuart, daughter of prominent Wythe County merchant George Stuart, received letters from her brother James Stuart as well as his comrades in the 13th Virginia Battalion Light Artillery (Otey Battery).  They vividly described the hardships of winter camp, scarcity of food, illness, lighthearted revelry, and the more somber aspects of life in the Petersburg trenches.  William Stuart, a sergeant in Co A. 4th Virginia Infantry Regiment, also regaled his sister with descriptions of battles at Fishers Hill, Cedar Creek, and the siege of Petersburg.

Edited by Cathleen Carlson Reynolds, the letters also chronicle life on the southwest Virginia home front with descriptions of Presbyterian church activities and a new minister, James Turner Leftwich, farming, business, and social occasions.  In particular, the missives of Laura's fiancé, Charles Benton Thomas, provide an illuminating glimpse into courtship, marriage, and devout faith in the wartime South.  Thomas also wrote Laura about his management of the Marion Magnetic Furnace and Onandage Tannery as well as preparations for the defense of Smyth County during the two Battles of Saltville in autumn 1864.  The letters also included descriptions of slave life including the hiring out of Stuart family slaves, a runaway slave, and the death of a household slave.
